Drill teaches precision, teamwork, and performing under pressure. Academic competitions sharpen critical thinking. PT events build resilience. Every competition a cadet enters - win or lose - adds to the leadership foundation NJROTC is built on.

Colts Neck Cadets Don't Just Participate - They Place
CNHS NJROTC has a track record of consistently finishing in the top ranks at Area Four competitions. That reputation is built by cadets who put in the work year-round and by families who show up to support them.
Where Our Cadets Compete
Competition Categories
CNHS cadets participate across multiple NJROTC competition disciplines. Each demands different skills - and our unit fields teams in all of them.
Academic Test Team
Timed written exams covering naval science, current events, maritime history, and leadership principles. Top-performing teams advance from regional qualifiers to national competition.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
Cadets are scored on curl-ups, push-ups, the mile run (or shuttle run), and sit-and-reach. Individual scores are combined for team standings. Top cadets qualify for fitness recognition awards.
Orienteering
Land navigation using a map and compass through a timed outdoor course. Tests problem-solving, endurance, and fieldcraft. Orienteering events are among the most challenging in the NJROTC competition calendar.

Competition preparation starts in early fall and runs through spring nationals. Here's how the season unfolds for CNHS cadets.

Team Tryouts & Formation
Cadets try out for drill teams, academic teams, and orienteering squads. Returning members mentor new competitors. Practice schedules are set for the year.

Area Manager's Inspection
The annual formal inspection evaluates the entire unit on drill, uniform standards, academics, and program administration. Results affect the unit's competitive standing and national ranking.

Fall Drill Meets
Early-season invitationals and scrimmage meets give teams live competition reps before the qualifying season begins.

JAN
Regional Qualifiers Begin
Area Four qualifying events across drill, academics, and PT. Top-placing teams earn advancement to state and national competition.

State & Area Championships
The highest level of regional competition. Finishers here determine which units represent the area at nationals.

National Championship
The top NJROTC units in the country compete at the Navy National Academic, Athletic, and Drill Championship held in Pensacola, FL.
