What Is NJROTC — And Why Does Colts Neck Have One Of The Best Units In The Country?
The CNHS NJROTC is a four-year leadership and character development program housed at Colts Neck High School. It is open to students across the Freehold Regional High School District and has been recognized as one of the most outstanding NJROTC units in the United States.

The Program
What Is NJROTC?
The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is a national leadership education program established by Congress in 1964 under Title 10, U.S. Code, Chapter 102. It is administered by the U.S. Navy and conducted at accredited high schools across the country.
NJROTC is not a recruiting program. There is no military obligation. The curriculum focuses on leadership, citizenship, discipline, and physical fitness — skills that prepare students for any path after graduation, whether that is college, a career, or military service.

The CNHS NJROTC
At Colts Neck High School, NJROTC operates as a full academy within the school. Cadets take NJROTC classes as part of their regular schedule, participate in competitions and community service, and develop leadership skills through a structured chain-of-command environment run by the cadets themselves.
The unit is led by retired Navy officers and enlisted instructors and supported by the CNHS NJROTC Parents Club.

What Cadets Study Each Year
The NJROTC curriculum is structured across four years (Naval Science 1–4) and blends classroom instruction with hands-on leadership. Here is a general overview — for the full curriculum, visit the cadet unit site.

NJROTC counts as an elective credit. Cadets take the course during the regular school day alongside their full academic schedule. It does not replace any core graduation requirements.

What Parents Ask Before Their Student Joins
“Does my child have to join the military after NJROTC?”
No. NJROTC carries zero military obligation. The program is a leadership and citizenship curriculum, not a recruiting pipeline. Graduates go on to college, civilian careers, trade schools, and yes — some choose military service. But the choice is entirely theirs.
“What’s the daily time commitment?”
NJROTC is a class period during the regular school day, just like any other elective. Outside of class, cadets participate in physical training, drill practice, community service, and optional competitions. The extracurricular commitment is similar to a varsity sport.
“Are there requirements to get in?”
Cadets must apply through the Freehold Regional High School District magnet program. Upon acceptance, students attend Colts Neck High School regardless of which district school they are zoned for. Full admissions details are on the cadet unit admissions page.
“How does NJROTC affect college applications?”
Strongly and positively. Admissions officers recognize NJROTC as a rigorous leadership program. Cadets graduate with documented leadership roles, community service hours, and competition results. Many cadets qualify for NROTC scholarships that can cover full tuition at participating universities.
“My student isn’t zoned for Colts Neck — can they still join?”
Yes. The CNHS NJROTC Academy is a magnet program open to students from all six high schools in the Freehold Regional High School District. Accepted students transfer to Colts Neck High School for the duration of the program.
“What if my child wants to quit after a year?”
The program is a four-year commitment, and cadets are expected to see it through. That said, the instructors and staff work closely with families to address concerns. Most cadets who struggle early find their footing and go on to thrive.
